Festivals are the regular activities in society and people all over the world celebrate them according to their customs and traditions.
A gift is an offering and a gesture of expressing love, goodwill. A gift is an appreciation. Giving a gift is a token recognition of service rendered.
When people give anything, they do not give the objects as gifts only. Along with these objects, they give their good or bad karma also as a gift to you. When you receive the gift from the people you will receive their karma and the fruits of their karmas, also.

The tradition of Bharathavarsha is great. This tradition permits the people to give and receive gifts according to dharma, the moral values.
The people observe a unique practice whenever a teacher or a scholar is invited to give talks or teachings. During that time, the teacher or the scholar is honoured with 'Gurudakshina.'
When a teacher, or a scholar or an expert is honoured in a proper manner, this becomes an opening for the schools and the students to use the knowledge that is spread by that teacher.
Maharshi Pathanjali says,
'aparigraha sthairye janma-kathantaa sanbodha'
