The three bodies will be in different states known as avastha traya. Avastha means a state. The three states are: 1. Jagrat avastha – the waking state, 2. Swapna avastha – the dream state, 3. Sushupthi avastha – the dreamless state or deep-sleep state.
Kosha means a sheath, a cover. There are five sheaths for the body. Annamaya Kosha, Pranamaya Kosha, Manomaya Kosha, Vijnanamaya Kosha and Anandamaya Kosha
Sthula shareera, the gross body has only one kosha
Sukshma shareera, the subtle body consists of the three kosha
All the five sheaths function during jagrath avastha
Only Anandamaya Kosha functions during sushuptha avastha
