Practically, it is difficult to mention the number of asanas. Though there is a common opinion about the number of asanas among the yogis, different texts on yoga mention the number of asanas according to the tradition that author of the text follows.
The traditional yoga schools of Bhatathavarsha select and practice asanas mentioned in the classic texts of yoga.
The scriptures say that there are 8.4 million living creatures and there are as many asanas as the number of living creatures.
The universe has both living and non-living beings. Each object has its own importance and role to play in its lifetime.
Asana is the same but is called by different names. For example, in Hatha Yoga Pradipika, it is said that Siddhasana is as Vajrasana; some call this asana as Mukthasana and some say it as Guptasana. That Siddhasana has these names when you practise Siddhasana only.
A few teachers say that only a few asanas are enough to learn and practise and it is not necessary to learn many asanas.
There is another recent trend that is getting more attention in the field of yoga. This recent trend in yoga is known as ‘Yoga therapy.’
