The span of attention

The duration or the length of the span of attention varies from one task to another; from one person to another. The mind wanders when it should be focused on something. There may be a short attention span which may bring certain negative effects such as poor performance of the task; inability to complete the task; missing the details or information on the task, etc.

    1. The span of attention is the duration of time that a person can focus on a job or a task without getting distracted. When the individual is performing an activity and the mind of the individual is drawn to some other activity then the individual gets distracted or his span of attention is disturbed.

Whenever my guru was explaining about the reasons for the different level of the practice and the focus on the practice of the students, he was giving wonderful examples about the state of and the behaviour pattern of the mind of the students.

    3. As long as this music does not activate the mind and does not bring more thoughts in the mind, there is no problem to have the music in the yoga class. If this playing of the music disturbs the focus of the mind and distracts the mind with a number of other thoughts, then the playing of the music should be stopped.

    5. The modern money-driven yoga gurus, who are dressing and posing as spiritual leaders have become a big problem for the honest and sincere students of yoga. With their colourful dress, flowery language and overnight invented yoga styles and courses, these modern gurus are, in a way, confusing and misleading the students.
