Yama is the first step of the ladder of Ashtanga Yoga.
Ahimsa, Sathya, Astheya, Brahmacharya and Aparigraha are the five yamas.
Ahimsa is a practice to avoid injury to all living creatures.
Sathya is a practice refraining from lying and betraying promises.
Astheya means non-stealing; a restraint from taking away the belongings of others.
Brahmacharya is an act of chaste behaviour leading to restoration of the powers.
One should practice aparigraha, the spontaneous non-acceptance of gifts from others, even at times of calamity.
